ISAA Labs™ is the premier testing and certification arm of the Institute for the Study of Arms & Armor (ISAA), offering a unique suite of services for firearms, ammunition, armor, and related defense technologies. Combining scientific precision with real-world application, we deliver impartial, high-fidelity testing and analysis for manufacturers, law enforcement, defense contractors, researchers, and legal teams.

What We Do

ISAA Labs provides:

​

• Firearms and ammunition certification to standards comparable to SAAMI, C.I.P., and NIJ

• Destructive and non-destructive testing for arms, armor, and ammunition

• Ballistic data collection and analysis with pressure sensors, Doppler radar, and high-speed imaging

• Armor and material performance testing to NIJ and MIL-STD threat levels

• Technical documentation and certification reports for compliance, marketing, or litigation

• Forensic recreation of live-fire crime scenes and historical engagements

• Prototype R&D evaluation under NDA protections​

 

We serve clients across the defense, law enforcement, research, and collector sectors—with full compliance to applicable BATFE and federal regulations.

Ballistics Testing Services

​

Our 200-yard indoor range, rated for calibers up to 20mm, supports:

​

• Velocity, energy, and dispersion mapping

• Barrel wear, cycling behavior, and chamber pressure

• High-speed projectile tracking and penetration analysis

• Gel block, armor, and structural impact testing

• Batch consistency checks for ammunition manufacturers

 

All tests are logged with full digital traceability and optional visual documentation.

Armor Certification & Materials Testing

​

Whether soft armor or advanced composites, ISAA Labs tests:

​

• Personal armor: vests, helmets, shields

• Vehicle and architectural panels

• Custom or exotic material resistance

• Single and multi-hit threat scenarios

• Edge and angle-specific strike performance

 

We issue certificates of compliance or failure based on NIJ, NATO, or custom threat profiles.

Optics, Light, and Laser Testing

​

• Evaluation of optics, lasers, and illumination tools including scopes, red dots, night vision, thermal, and IR devices

• Testing for clarity, distortion, magnification accuracy, parallax, reticle consistency, and zero retention

• Illumination and laser devices assessed for beam divergence, wavelength accuracy, output power (mW), and ANSI Z136 safety compliance

• Environmental stress tests: thermal cycling, shock, vibration, submersion, fogging, and MIL-STD-810H durability

• Recoil simulation and live-fire testing to confirm tracking, return-to-zero, and structural integrity

• Verification of smart optics and ballistic rangefinder accuracy and functionality

• Optional IR signature measurement and detection resistance evaluation for defense clients

• Certification reports include scoring, photographic documentation, and equipment traceability

 

Forensic & Legal Testing

ISAA Labs offers scene recreation services to:

• Test legal theories of engagement using matching weapons and conditions

• Validate bullet trajectory, material behavior, and ricochet patterns

• Support courtroom evidence preparation and presentation

• Utilize 3D mapping, slow-motion footage, and forensic capture tools

 

These services are available to agencies, attorneys, and researchers on a case-by-case basis.
